Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat — The Core Theatre, Solihull — 22 October 2025

A welcome return to The Core Theatre in Solihull after major building issues and an equally appreciated invite from St Alphege Musical Theatre Production Society (STAMPS) to review their latest offering. What I didn’t mention in accepting was that Joseph is one of my top ten hated musicals. Ah … be afraid. But don’t worry, I can only comment on what is performed and I am happy to say STAMPS blew this one out of the park. It takes a great production to wipe away pre-existing worries but out of all the shows I have seen this society present, this was by far the best. From start to finish, the power and joy exuberated off the stage and into to stalls, and everyone went home happy after giving the deserved ovation this production deserved.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber retells the mythical story of a young Canaanite boy who being the favourite son of Jacob, lords it over his brothers with his premonitions until they get fed up and tell their father he has died while really selling him into slavery. Well, nobody likes a clever dick, do they. After an unfortunate episode in the house of Potipher in Egypt, Joseph is imprisoned but his dream telling reaches the ears of Pharoah. Here he predicts 7 years of prosperity followed by 7 years of famine which prompts Pharoah to stockpile in anticipation. This makes Joseph wealthy and important and eventually, his starving family ask for help, and they realise their errors of the past.

The story is told by the Narrator and I am glad to say all dialogue was sung on this occasion superbly by Alice Bennett who linked the show together memorably and also shone in A Pharoah’s Story. As Joseph we had Dylan Norris and he excelled throughout, giving a stunning rendition of Close Every Door in particular. Supporting well in the cast, though were Anthony Tonks (Jacob), Paul Wozniak (Simeon), Kieran Scott (Naphtali), Chris Westwood (Gad), Devlin Young (Asher/Camel), Michael Smith (Dan/Potipher), Cameron Kyffin (Zebulun), Jack Chatten (Benjamin), Callum Byrne (Judah), and Miya Mitchell (Mrs. Potipher). Finally (and I have never gotten this), Pharaoh in Elvis guise was brilliantly portrayed by Robert Bateman. A special mention to Andrew Hodkinson who could not portray Reuben for health reasons and to whom the show was dedicated. Amateur theatre companies are a family, and families are there for each other.

What I liked about this production (and was lacking from the last professional version I saw) was the energy, atmosphere and efforts go outside of the box at times. A singing camel? Just one of many areas of injected humour that went down well. Also, skilful use of lighting with the overheads, creating the impression of bars in the prison.

Now one niggle with the script itself (as with that other Rice/Lloyd Webber treat, Jesus Christ Superstar); women are severely underrepresented. Not a lot you can do, I suppose, considering the source material, unless Tim and Andy get together to do an updated version. Still, the women on stage were amazing and STAMPS certainly made sure their presence was felt. These were Bethany WydeGeorgia HarleyLeanne PlewsLynne DavisOlivia PughPaige Yeomans and Sophie Rawson.

Also pleasurable for me was the increased involvement of the child singers. In the past, I have just seen a seated chorus, but these younger members were truly part of the show in song and movement and especially dance. Due to the usual restrictions, the child casts were split into Team 1 and 2. I saw the latter who delighted all in the audience with their energy and delivery. These were Abbie CockerillAnaiah MaybeckBenjamin TomkinsonBethan JamesErin MullisEvelyn KnottMolly Butler, and Penny Moore. But let’s not forget the ones I missed out on from Team 1, for I am sure there were equally amazing. These were Aisling MustardAlice TrothArianna GuerinDarcy ChurchillEloisa Guerin, Hollie Stone, Isabella PowisLeah WainwrightSofia-Rose Nykamp and Sophie Hornsey. Ironically, one of those on Team 1 that I could not see due to my availability, was on stage with last week starring alongside me in another production. It’s a small but lovely world, the local theatre scene.

The director and choreographer for this show was Robert Bateman (already mentioned on stage) with musical direction (and a live band) from Phil Ypres-Smith. Both can be well proud of the results and along with the cast, fully deserving of the applause and comments I heard afterwards. I must also commend the amazing costumes, courtesy of Leo’s Theatrical Costumes. Nice warm welcome from Front of House, too.

Dad’s Army — Chaddesley Corbett Village Hall — 26 September 2025

Always a pleasure to see Tinkers Farm and for me, this was the most enjoyable production yet. Now, they would not have known this beforehand, but they were inviting someone who is a bit of an expert on Dad’s Army in me, and I am glad to say, they got everything spot on. That is not to say I would not have enjoyed it otherwise, but I can only applaud how much research had gone into putting on this show.

The play includes four original scripts of the classic sitcom by Jimmy Perry and David Croft, each keeping episodic format with two in each act. These are: The Deadly Attachment (Series 6), Mum’s Army (Series 4), The Godiva Affair (Series 7), and The Floral Dance (Originally a sketch during Christmas with the Stars (1970) and later performed at the Royal Variety Performance (1975).

Of course, there are many more scripts, but those in the show are ones best suited to stage. In Deadly Attachment, we have the well-known encounter with the U-Boat Captain and “Don’t tell him, Pike.” The Godiva Affair has Morris Dancing and (the never seen) Elizabeth Mainwaring stealing the moment at the end while The Floral Dance exploits a chance for a bit of pantomime style singsong. But it is Mum’s Army which appealed most as like in the series, it shows a different side to the stuffy, pompous Captain Mainwaring as he falls in love with another woman (Mrs Gray) and is heartbroken when she leaves. Possibly the only episode to end without studio laughter, showing that comedy and tragedy are never far apart.

Of the cast, I can only give the highest compliment, and I felt that I was watching the originals. At the top of this tree was Andrew Potter who was so like Arthur Lowe it was uncanny. The moment those glasses came off and a hand wiped the troubled brow I was taken back to my childhood of watching on TV. And the king of facial expressions, John Le Mesurier was brilliantly reproduced by Stephen Homer as the long-suffering Sergeant Wilson. Roger Goddard displayed Lance Corporal Jones’ idiosyncrasies and incompetence, always being out of step with the rest of the squadron. Likewise, with Frazer (Tam Weir), Godfrey (Geoff Westwood), Walker (Simon Wilkinson), and Pike (Tom Bowes), all were amazing and I have to say again, kudos to the research and application.

Supporting, we had Diane Hingley as the glamourous Mrs Fox, reproducing Pamela Cundell’s original portrayal well, plus Rachel Royal (Mavis Pike), Lee Southall (Private Sponge/Rev Farthing), Tim Harding (Hodges) Dominic Butters (Mr Yeatman), and Raymond Turrell (Colonel Pritchard) completing superbly the rest of the regular cast. The remaining characters were also equally strong, namely Beth Siviter-Coupland (Mrs Gray), Richard Cooper (U-Boat Captain and Mr Cheeseman), Sarah Jennings (Waitress), Rebecca Bate (Edith Parish), Kerry Whatley (Ivy Samways), Charlie Harding (Mrs Ironside), Julia Lindop (Mrs Prosser) and Dave Healing and Mike Richardson (U-Boat Sailors).

Credit to production for costumes, and for the set, created by Richard Cooper. Chaddesley Corbett Village Hall is what it says on the tin, a small venue, so to have that effective set look so well was excellent. And well done to Steve Percy and his backstage crew for working in what I can only imagine would invite a new definition of the word, cramped. Excellent lighting from Going Dark complemented the show, separating scenes well at times. A thorough, all-round triumph. Finally, Dad’s Army was directed by Emma Harley (also in charge of sound) and I can only heap as much praise as I can. Many years ago, for a wartime concert, I wrote and directed a script based on the characters of Dad’s Army (Names were changed to protect the guilty) and that was a labour of love. I can tell from everyone involved in this Tinkers Farm production that this was a labour of love too, as it was for me writing this review.

Another great welcome from Script Youth Musical Theatre Company and another fantastic production. And this was their biggest yet, now in the main auditorium of The Crescent Theatre, Birmingham. Now, it seems that only a few weeks ago I was reviewing another Script production in Legally Blonde Jr. And that is down to the company having a younger section in recent times. This means that the talent is always coming through when it reaches full potential. And this is even more important when you consider a number on stage in Beauty and the Beast were taking part in what would certainly be an emotional final performance before leaving for pastures new.

This is the classic love tale brought to life with the music of Alan Menken, lyrics from Howard Ashman and Tim Rice with a book by Linda Wolverton. Featuring well known songs such as Be Our Guest, No Matter What, Gaston and that tale as old as time, Beauty and the Beast (Title Song), the story is possibly more famous as the 1991 Disney film. But make no mistake, the stage musical is far superior and nobody I have seen has done it better than Script.

Playing Belle was Erin Phillips who was excellent in the lead role. Amazing voice and perfectly at home and confident throughout. Samuel McCormack played the Beast well, commanding the stage with authority but also showing the vulnerability the character needed. If I Can’t Love Her was amazing. Finlay Laidlaw was the arrogant Gaston who shone particularly during his own-named song. Always a good performance from the long-standing member. And the same can be said for Evie Rice in her final show. I have seen Evie many times and each role is as diverse from the last as could be possible, showing the skill of the character actor. This time it was Lefou, falling and being thrown about stage continuously in a comic fashion that Evie rose to admirably. I also need to break away from cast complements to add that she was also responsible for the design and creation of the main costumes, as part of her final year at the prestigious Birmingham Ormiston Academy (BOA).

Also shining, if you forgive the pun, was Kian Haden as Lumiere who shared excellent comic moments with the equally superb Aimee Whillis as Cogsworth. Playing Mrs Potts was Chloe Mason whose delivery of the title song was superb. A special mention to a new member in the fabulous Oliver Malkin who had the unenviable task of spending nearly all of the show in a teacup on a trolley as Chip. The rest of the brilliant principals were Zachariah Scrivens (Maurice), Jess Lewis (Madame De La Grande Bouche), Amelia Green (Bookseller), Calvin Gunn (Monsiuer D’Arc) and finally, Louise Heard as Babette, whose lovely smile throughout was infectious.

A huge shout out to the main dancers interpreting the great choreography of Kelly McCormack. These were Effie Jobling, Isabelle Round, Darci Rice and Lexie Shaw. I have to say, the performance of Be Our Guest was one of the best dance numbers that I have seen for a long time. The rest of the named cast were Frankie Donahue (Narrator), Baily Latusek (Baker), and Leo Stubbington (Young Prince). But equally as important is the ensemble which no show can do without. These were Maia Johnson, Corey Mayne, Holly Hardcastle, Dean Donnelly, Grace Bishop, Charlotte Redman, Nevada Grizzle-Francis, Isla Thorp, Dotty Twigg, Scarlette Williams and Heidi Haskins. Please correct me if I have missed anyone or spelled names wrong.

The rest of the production team were Louise Farmer (Director) and Tom Wells (Musical Direction) who can be enormously proud of what was one of the best from Script to date. Although some students are leaving, the future still looks secure with the talent awaiting. And that is great news for future productions of Into the Woods Jr. (Nov 2025), Six – Teen Edition (July 2026) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (September 2026). I highly recommend.

Calamity Jane — The Grand, Wolverhampton — 9 September 2025

Calamity Jane is one of the all-time classics, no doubt. A whip-cracking’ romp from start to finish, full of huge songs (by Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster) with a great script from Charles K Freeman, adapted from the original James O’Hanlon screenplay. It is the tale of the Wild West with mistaken identities and love triangles and a huge dose of comedy throughout.

In the lead role we had Carrie Hope Fletcher who is not only one of the top names in UK Musical Theatre, but also a joy to watch on every occasion. It is no surprise then that she totally nailed the part of Calamity with presence, song, and dance, fully deserving top billing. But there were also many other star performances. Vinny Coyle was a great Wild Bill Hickok and as well as being eye candy, excelled throughout the show. Lt. Danny Gilmartin was portrayed well by Luke Wilson as was Katie Brown in Seren Sandham-Davies. Samuel Holmes and Holly Cassar (Francis Fryer and Susan, respectively) worked together in a complementary fashion while Peter Peverley took advantage of some fine, memorable comic moments. Always nice to see shows updated, particularly in areas concerning sensitive topics about race. Therefore, the outdated forfeit of Bill Hickok wearing an outfit of Sweetheart of the Sioux, he now takes on the costume of the Queen of England.

If you had never seen Calamity Jane, you would be surprised how many songs you already knew. Deadwood Stage, Just Blew in From the Windy City, Black Hills of Dakota and the most famous, Secret Love. However, on my viewing, my favourite this time was A Woman’s Touch. Yes, it’s an old-fashioned tale but being set period, still works and does not feel dated at all.

The original director for Calamity Jane was Nikolai Foster with the co-director and choreographer being Nick Winston. Musical supervision and orchestration were in the safe hands of Catherine Jayes and one of the most impressive features was that most music was played by the actors on stage. With that, an excellent set, great sound and lighting were all icing on the cake for this production which was phenomenal in all departments. It concludes its run in Bristol this week. If you can, I would recommend a trip. The Deadwood Stage is waiting for you. Yeeha!

Avenue Q – The Grieg Hall, Alcester – 26 July 2025

And that take on life is so true of Avenue Q. A show which many theatregoers might dismiss without checking it out. I mean, Sesame Street style puppets, really? But with great music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, plus an outrageous book from Jeff Whitty, Avenue Q is a masterpiece. Yes, it’s the parody of all parodies where political correctness is banished to a parallel universe and all you can do is sit back and watch those on stage deliver everything you have ever thought but never had the courage to say aloud. The show utilises a blend of traditional Muppet style and visible puppetry with performers mirroring movements and emotions while also interacting with each other.

Princeton, fresh out of college and looking for somewhere to live, ends up on Avenue Q, because Avenues A to P are too expensive. There he meets a variety of outlandish puppet characters, plus three that are human. I do wonder, though, how long the Gary Coleman joke will remain relevant before folk are too young to get it. There is love, lust, sensitive subjects and … porn. In fact, when I first saw this show many years ago, my fourteen-year-old daughter (at the time) only came because she said she wanted to see the puppet porn. I would like to quote the legend that was Kenny Everrett and say it was, “All done in the best possible taste,” but honestly, it really isn’t, and that’s what makes the show amazing.

Tom Mullins was a brilliant Princeton, and I could feel the angst and irony every time the lines were spoken. In the role of Kate Monster was Carys Charley who was similarly outstanding and giving my number of the night in A Fine, Fine Line. Then, in a parody of Sesame Street’s Bert and Ernie, we meet Rod (Scott Cartwright) and Nicky (Craig McDowall). The chemistry between them was amazing and you do believe in these characters. I love these two, especially during Fantasies Come True. Favourite moment – “You put the earmuffs on the cookie.”

Now, I’ll be honest, the Hard Luck Bears are freaky. It’s like being five again and seeing the Child Catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for the first time. I know they look cute, but these two creep the hell out of me. In this showing Michael Treagust (Boy Bear) and Sophie Hill (Girl Bear) did just that, which was job done. Excellent performances. The porn addicted Trekkie Monster was played by Matt Bridgewater who really looked as though he was enjoying this role too much, so was the conviction of delivery and depravity. Joanne Remes shone in the role of Lucy the Slut (I did say this show wasn’t PC) and was exceptional vocally during Special while the rest of the puppeteers were Janet Fryer (Mrs Thistletwat), Chorley Merrell (Ricky/Trekkie Hand/Robin) and Emma Shaw (Newcomer/Nicky’s Hand/Mrs Thistletwat’s Hand). Finally, the three real-life creatures in this marvellous show were Brian (Ben Adams), Christmas Eve ((Jennifer Chow) and Gary Coleman (Patison Harrigan). All on top form, they were perfect and convincing in acting alongside their less than human counterparts.

There are so many great numbers in this show. Sucks to be Me, Life Outside Your Apartment, Schadenfreude, I Wish I Could Go Back to College … I could go on. I also have fondness for Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist and The Internet is for Porn. However, my favourite is Rod’s panicky cover up short and My Girlfriend Who Lives in Canada and the end line of, “I just can’t wait to eat her pussy again.”

Avenue Q was the debut show for new amateur company, Theatre SSL which came about by the desire to put on this show, and what a success the result was. Hannah Finch (Director/Choreographer), Sophie Hill (Musical Director) and Jacob Finch (Producer) can be extremely proud of this production. What a great show. Everyone should see it.

And tonight, Kinver, we are 
Live.

First time out for me seeing anything from Kinver Light Operatic Society, but it was an easy choice with a fantastic show I first tasted last year in the West End.

Six (Teen Edition) — Kinver High School — 26 June 2025

Six. A simple concept. Roughly 75 minutes, no break. A tale of the six wives of wheezing, wrinkled, ulcer-ridden Henry VIII through the medium of a concert to decide which queen was dealt the cruellest blow and who is the most important. Each tell their story, in order, via songs mixed with good humour, excellent lyrics and an incredible soundtrack courtesy of Lucy Moss and Toby Marlow.

Having not long completed a production of 9 to 5, I am guessing Six was a side project to feature the younger cast members because (A) they could, and (B) you only need six women. Plus, it’s only available for amateur licence in its teen edition. But I have to say, having seen the adult version, I, for the life of me, could not think of anything which was omitted. Opening with Ex-Wives, this show grabs you from the start and does not have any in the audience checking watches for the time. It just flows. But you do need a strong cast, equally divided, which was what we got on opening night.

Six (Teen Edition) — Kinver High School — 26 June 2025

In order – Aragon. Izzy Pitt delivered an amazing and powerful performance of No Way with great vocals, showing all the frustration and anger, having done nothing wrong to the King apart from getting old.

Boleyn. Great characterisation. I was amazed to learn that Sophie-Rose Hodgetts is only 14, because you would never have thought so during the wonderful Don’t Lose Your Head. I still have “Sorry, not sorry,” going round my head.

Seymour. Robyn Harding continued proceedings as the humble Jane with the power ballad Heart of Stone. This is an extremely emotional number and wow! That note. Excellent. Goosebumps throughout.

Halfway through we get an onstage musical interlude in House of Holbein, a disco-trance number from all six which leaves you gasping for breath. And that’s just the audience.

Cleves. Jasmine Ward gave it all with sass and energy during Get Down. So strong in commanding the stage. “Get DOWN, you dirty rascal.” It really showed in Ward’s performance that her character was the only one who enjoyed her lifestyle.

Howard. The second Catherine’s story is one of tragedy and exploitation and Libby Currell did amazing justice during All You Wanna Do. This is such a tale of trauma for anyone to enact, but Currell certainly got the point across.

Parr. The survivor. However, the message here was that sometimes, especially when the King decrees it, you do not have freedom of choice. Summer Bloom was magnificent in I Don’t Need Your Love, a number which rounds off the contest perfectly.

Six (Teen Edition) — Kinver High School — 26 June 2025

But who was the winner? Nobody, because you don’t need one. And they did not need the fact of being married to a disgusting tyrant to confirm their place in history. And like the metaphor, no one song was the winner either. I certainly can never choose one. Therefore, they get together and rewrite their own history. The show concludes after I Don’t Need Your Love (Remix) with the amazing Six and Megasix. This really is a top show, and I enjoyed this production as much as the West End. Therefore, well done to Ricky Houlston-Dowell (Director), Attiye Passey (Choreography), then Nina Best and Kate Cox (Co-Musical Directors). Costumes were great too, replicating those worn in the West End and on tour.

Must die, must die, this Jesus must die.

Jesus Christ Superstar — Dormiston Mill Theatre — 31 May 2025

One show always has a special place in my heart as it was that of my first time on stage. I had also seen it twice before, professionally, but never an amateur or in this case, a youth version. I was, therefore, delighted to be invited back by Smile Musical Youth Theatre to review Jesus Christ Superstar.

An excellent Front of House full of gift stalls and many raffle prizes (I won two), and friendly volunteers to give help where needed. And with my history of this production, I was looking forward to (even with me being an atheist) enjoying a musical about Jesus. Well, I treat it as any other work of fiction.

JCS tells of the last days of Jesus Christ, his betrayal by the ones around him and the persecution from those whose stability of power he threatens. I hate to go on yet again about having done this show, but when the opening guitar chords of Overture sounded, I had goosebumps. We were immediately introduced to the insurgent, James Alphaeus (Grace Paskin) who delivered a wonderful solo lyrical dance while being confronted by the black clad aggresion representing authority.

Straight away I was drawn to the costumes (Courtesy of Suzanne Harris), which for the rebels, could easily have come from my wardrobe. Yes, Harem Pants galore, which of course, I approved of. As mentioned already, black was the theme of oppression and this went for all in that category, be it Roman or Jewish Authority. On stage we had a static set which works well in this show, made all more atmospheric by the excellent lighting provided by Jack Tustin from Going Dark Theatrical Services. I must also credit the sound (DW Technical Services) which apart from one brief bit of feedback was otherwise faultless. But I have talked enough tech; on with the show.

In the role of JC was Samuel Broomhall-Tighe who I have seen a few times now, and this was by far his best performance of an already high caliber. Outstanding in Gethsemane and Poor Jerusalem, among others. In fact, this was the best Jesus I have seen from an auditorium, and I’ve experienced Glenn Carter in the role. What I also liked about Smile’s Jesus was the freedom to break from the clichéd version of having him look like a 1970s Bee Gee. Here we had what appeared a normal guy; a good stamp of individuality for this show.

Onto Judas and another first in my experience in the fact that the role was female. Macy O’Donoghue was simply amazing, excelling in Heaven on our Minds and Damned for All Time, while leading well in Superstar. Then, together with Samuel Broomhall-Tighe, the vocal battle between Judas and Jesus during The Last Supper. An especially powerful Judas, also topping those I had seen professionally. As Mary Magdelene, Nancy Minaker completed the trio of better than the professional, in my opinion. So strong from the earliest appearance and perfection and power during I Don’t Know How to Love Him.

Supporting well in solo songs were Josh Mills (Simon the Zealot) in Simon Zealots, Michael Robinson (Peter) during Could We Start Again Please, Freddie Perry (Pilate) in Pilate’s Dream and The Trial and finally, the gloriously OTT Taylor Simner as Herod in Herod’s Song. Then you had two more figures of authority as heads of the priests in Makena Straker-Sharpe (Caiaphas) and Charlie McRobert (Annas). This Jesus Must Die (Always a favourite of mine as it included my first ever lines) had those goosebumps rising again.

The remainder of this excellent cast not already mentioned were Hannah Allsop (Andrew), Isabella Fitzpatrick (James Zebedee), Amelia Perry (John), Katelyn Elizabeth Harper (Bartholemew), Evie-May Smith (Matthew), Annabella Nneka Amogu (Thaddeus), Violet Flynn Jones (Phillip), Cian Grayson, Cat Allsop, Maxwell Ridley (Priests), Molly-Ann Oakley, Isla Smith, Ezme-Jean Forbes-Moore (Soul Girls) with Jackson Tomkys, Libby Sandle and Georgia Haynes completing the ensemble.

There was so much to love about this performance, and I was mesmerised by all the blood in 39 Lashes and even more so by the surreal image of those dressed in white singing Superstar, complete with splatter. The production team of Joe Logan (Director and Choreographer), Elliot Lingard (Musical Director), Sarah Jennings (Vocal Coach) and Tom Fitzpatrick (Assistant Musical Director) can be well pleased with the results of months of hard work.

You can tell I have enjoyed a show when a review is so easy to write, as in this case. One session taking 60 minutes, 800 words with only the minimal editing. Best version of Jesus Christ Superstar I have seen. Well done all.

Little Women is not a story that in the 1960s to 70s, should have appealed to a boy. You see, we were supposed to be into Action Men toys and war comics. However, while at a trip to the dentist, aged 4, I was offered a free comic from the reception, I chose the Bunty. Therefore, my range of culture has never exactly been stereotypical. Therefore, over 50 years later, I readily attended Anne-Marie Casey’s adaptation of Little Women at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre.

Based on the 1868-69 novels, Little Women and Good Wives, by Louisa May Alcott, the story revolves around four sisters (Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March) who mature from childhood throughout the story. The themes Little Women addresses are domesticity, work, and true love, all independently and each important to the hero’s individual identity. As in the book, the plot takes an episodic format with each sequence seamlessly segueing into the next, and much credit must go to Loveday Ingram (Direction) and Mike Ashcroft (Movement) for this.

A minimal set always works, letting the imagination do the rest without the need for extravagance which detracts from the performances of the cast. This was the case with this production and Ruri Murchison’s designs totally did the trick and were complemented by excellent sound and lighting from Matthew Bugg and Mike Robertson, respectively. Credit also to Dave Nelson and his stage management team.

Playing the principal sister, Grace Malony displayed all the tomboyish character of Jo while showing the fiery temper and stubborn personality as she matures into the successful writer she is to become. The dependable and eldest girl, Meg was portrayed by Jade Kennedy who captured the character’s down-to-earth sprit. Then you get Beth. I always have an affinity for Beth, and her demise is still to this day one of the most tragic and upsetting in literature. Catherine Chalk, I am pleased to say totally nailed the part and gave me the Beth I knew. And then we get Amy. Ah, Amy, the troublesome youngest sibling, precocious and vain at times who like many youngest children gets what they want. Imogen Elliott was perfect in this role, but also showed the softer side at times, which I liked.

There were also good performances from Cillian Lenaghan (Theodore “Laurie” Lawrence) and Jack Ashton, playing John Brooke in Act One, and Professor Bhaer in Act Two. Stepping up to replace Honeysuckle Weeks as Marmee was Ellie Pawsey who totally owned this role.

Finally, as Aunt March, the domineering matriarch of the family, was Belinda Lang. I have liked and enjoyed Lang’s work for well over forty years. To Serve Them All Our Days (I’ll never get over Beth Powlett-Jones’ death – sob!), the brilliant Dear John and one of my all-time favourites, the often outside of the box comedy, 2Point4 Children. I can honestly say, though, such is the high calibre of acting from Lang, you would not have known it was her, such was she Aunt March. Powerful and formidable but caring at times. A wonderful performance I was privileged to see.

Always a joy to be present at a Tinker’s Farm production and my outing to see The Producers was no exception. There is so much bad taste in this Mel Brooks musical, it’s wrong every way you look at it. Yet it is so brilliant. Blimey, it was controversial when the original film was released in 1967, so heaven knows how it survives a woke culture of the 2020s. Fortunately, it has, and audiences still enjoy this funny, well-written romp by Brooks (aided with the book by Thomas Meehan).

The plot: Failed Broadway Producer, Max Bialystock is persuaded by accountant, Leo Bloom that they could make more money from a flop than a success. Therefore, they choose a script about Hitler and the Third Reich and put it on Broadway. Now, I don’t know if it happened this time, but I have heard that folks have left during the interval in the past with this show, even before Springtime for Hitler. And that’s a shame because if people would accept it for the tongue-in-cheek farce that it is, they would see a great show.

In the role of Max was Daniel Cox who looked like he was born to play this role and excelled in all areas. However, it is Betrayed which is the solo of all solos that topped a marvelous performance. Equally good as Leo we had Richard Cooper who also nailed the part as written. I Wanna to be a Producer was superb. Also excellent and playing Ulla was Rebecca Bate who doesn’t enter until near the interval but at once makes a mark with When You’ve Got it, Flaunt It.

Normally I would have a dream of playing one character from a show but in The Producers, there is so much choice. Any of the following would fit the bill. As Liebkind we had Matthew Morgan and Der Gutten Tag Hop-Clop is as poor taste as they come, but it is so funny. Then you have the wonderful duo of Roger De Bris (Tom Bowes) and Carmen Ghia (Tyrone Howell). Again, totally as written in all the stereotypical glory that makes this show great. These are my favourite characters and led an extravagant rendition of Keep it Gay, which simply got bigger and bigger, eventually spilling into the audience. Completing the principals in fine send-up fashion was Dianne Hingley as Hold-Me Touch-Me, one of Max’s ageing backers.

This show is full of top-notch tunes in addition to those already mentioned. I have a fondness for We Can Do It, having performed it myself but the pinnacle of bad taste is Springtime for Hitler, and you must wonder how Mel Brooks got away with it all those years ago.

The Producers was directed and choreographed by Emma Harley with musical direction from Tim Harding and both can be well satisfied with the results. I must also credit the impressive costumes and excellent sound and lighting from Going Dark while not forgetting the slick stage crew who managed a good set. This must be difficult to work, especially as you need two versions of Max’s office, pre and post Ulla (No spoilers).

There was not one weak area in this production; cast or crew, and it was of the highest professional standards. Be sure to check out Tinkers Farm Operatic, for they are a gem of the Midlands theatre scene.

Newsies Jr. — Dormiston Mill Theatre — 10 May 2025

I had never seen Newsies before this showing, although I was familiar with several of the numbers, having performed or used them in concerts and pantomimes of my own. With the music of Alan Menken (Lyrics by Jack Feldman) and book from Harvey Fierstein, Newsies tells the tale of young paper vendors and their fight for decent pay, held back from them by the greedy newspaper owner.

This was my second sampling of West Bromwich Operatic Society Youth (WBOS Youth) and with the calibre of cast and links to the senior incarnation of this company, I knew I was in for a treat. I see a lot of youth theatre, and this was as polished as any professional production. I can honestly say that there was not one single weak area in any of the performances.

In the lead role of Jack Kelly, Melvin Umah excelled in all areas. Good acting and strong vocals, particularly during Santa Fe. Alongside him was Grace Boden as Katherine and she too gave a stunning performance and totally nailed Watch What Happens. I know how difficult that song is to master and time correctly and have seen it done both brilliantly and terrible in the past. Fortunately, Grace was the former. Amazing.

Sometimes in junior versions pre-existing songs from the full show are omitted and replaced with others, and this was the case with Just a Pretty Face. Led by Casey Michaela (who I saw recently for Birmingham Youth Theatre in the Snow White Panto) as Medda, this was a wonderful number with great vocals complemented by equally amazing backing and dance from Athena Paskin (Ada), Macy Pickett (Olive) and Holly Edwards (Ethel). Completing the principals were Jordan Obrien (Pulitzer), Freddie and Oscar Wetherall (Davey and Les), and Jack Keasley who gave a heartwarming performance as Crutchie and delivered a fine rendition of Letter from the Refuge.

On top of the outstanding solo numbers there are some incredible company tunes, and this is where Newsies rocks. Carrying the Banner set the tone from the off and The World Will Never Know continued that. But it is the massive duo of King of New York and Seize the Day which had the audience punching the air. At the finale, after Once and for All, the audience were on their feet, and rightly so.

Costumes and makeup were excellent while backstage controlled a simple set which changed smoothly whenever it needed to. The director of Newsies was Emma Wetherall with choreography from Claire Flavell and musical direction by Amber Seddon.

This was a marvelous show; however, I am unfortunately in London for a West End Weekend at the time of WBOS Youth’s next production of West Side Story. If I were not, I would certainly be in attendance. I do, however, recommend you all are.
